When asked to come up with a visual metaphor to evoke a Learning Journey through OLTD, VIU's Online Learning and Teaching Graduate Diploma, images of nature and scenic Northern British Columbia come to mind. I've always loved the water, the mountains, and the outdoors, not just for nature's ability to nourish the soul, but also for its ability to guide, enlighten and journey into the unknown. When outdoors, one can follow the tracks and be guided to a destination, near or far. Or, one can take a leap of faith and journey along the water or climb a mountain to see where the path may lead. The destination usually provides an unexpected view, and more often than not, a pleasant surprise, realization or understanding.
The visual metaphor and image above is much like my Learning Journey in OLTD. As an educator, I see the OLTD program as offering the nourishment I need to be effective, enthusiastic and current in my professional role as a DL teacher. This program is important so I can continue to update my teaching practice to better facilitate the learning of my students. As a learner, the OLTD program provides me with the opportunity to stretch my thinking and challenge myself. I can follow the tracks of others and incorporate my own teaching and learning experiences. I can also climb mountains and dip my toes into the often murky and unexplored waters of technology integration in education, teaching online, and in general, all the affordances offered by the Internet and Web-based technology. My Learning Journey is helping to shape my vision; a vision with a more interesting and expanded horizon.
