I consider learning to be a continuum. Consequently, I think I will be able to recognize when I have met some of my OLTD goals, but perhaps not others. Concrete and easily discernible goals, such as the use of more interactive teaching technologies and techniques, will perhaps be clearly evident. This type of goal can be measured by ongoing formative assessment. Engagement with students and between students will demonstrate this goal has been met. Further assessment of which students are interacting with the interface or other individuals will determine if overall engagement has increased, of if only students with certain learning styles or demographics have engaged. Moreover, an analysis of the quality of interaction and the student’s satisfaction with the interaction should be considered. Has the goal been reached on a superficial level, or in a meaningful context that will contribute to reflection and a higher level of cognitive processing?
Goals that are more general and broader in their scope will require more time for the evaluation of their success. For example, the success of First Nations students in meeting their educational goals may need to be measured over a few years to determine if a true shift occurs. Many factors can affect the success of students in an online learning environment. Patterns from data measured over time more accurately reflect the success of a course design or program (and hence the philosophy of learning and pedagogy). I hope my journey enhances my ability and skill to reflect upon and critically evaluate these components. I will know I have arrived when my vision and understanding of the path options and trail requirements are clear.
