Online learning and new technologies are said to be key contributing factors towards emerging pedagogies, affecting the way we teach, but more importantly, the way students learn. The increasing flexibility and access to learning are indicative of a changing society, learner expectations, and innovative technologies and practices. The new demands of a knowledge-based society (requiring 21st century skills such as those outlined by teachonline.ca: “critical thinking, independent learning, knowing how to use relevant information technology, software, and data within a field of discipline, and entrepreneurialism”), new student expectations for learning to be engaging and relevant to their real-world, and new innovative technologies afforded by the Web contribute to these emerging pedagogies.
